When you travel with us, we get you out into the beautiful New Zealand countryside where you set your tent up beside lakes, oceans and rivers.

Our student tours are very popular so get in quick! We leave from Nelson, Picton, Wellington and Auckland but we're happy to help arrange your transport to/from other parts of NZ if needed (own cost).

This full North Island tour covers all the cultural, activity and scenic highlights that make the North Island of New Zealand so unique.  From thermal wonders and Maori culture to golden coastlines and ancient Kauri forests there is something for everyone.  Here are some of the awesome highlights:

Travel like a local and experience Maori culture:   We are proud to be kiwi owned and operated.  One thing that makes our tours so unique is our focus on sharing our knowledge and passion for kiwi culture and heritage.  On this tour you will get the chance to learn and immerse yourself in the locations and history that shaped New Zealand.  From historic Maori buildings to the Haka and rock carvings we will share all our historic treasures with you.

- Wake up to spectacular views: This tour has an excellent mix of remote and more commercial campsites where you will get direct access to spectacular beaches, beautiful forests and also enjoy a big city fix with a couple of nights in the cities of Wellington and Auckland.

  1. Leaving Nelson at 9am we make our way towards Picton, making a stop at Pelorus bridge, a Hobbit film location and a great place for a quick dip on a warm day. Leaving Picton we travel the scenic ferry sailing through the picturesque Marlborough sounds to Wellington. Camping isn’t feasible in the heart of the nation’s capital so we will be staying at a great hostel centrally located in the city.

    • Walks and Hikes: we'll make a stop at pelorus bridge that has short walking tracks and is a Hobbit film location
    • Drive Distance: 2 Hours and 3 Hours on the Ferry
  2. Today we welcome those joining us in Wellington before we depart at 9:30am and travel up the scenic Kapiti Coast towards the Taranaki region – home to wonderful beaches, crashing waves and the spectacular Mount Taranaki, one of the most symmetrical volcanic cones in the world. Our campsite is beside the Taranaki coastline offering a short scenic walk or cycle from camp at the end of the day.

  3. Early departure to the limestone wonderland of Waitomo Caves for an optional black water rafting tour which is a totally unique experience – sitting in your rubber ring, your experienced and knowledgeable guides will take you through a maze of underground caves and streams whose ceilings are coated in glow-worms that produce a radiant light to lead you through. There are a range of options to explore the caves, from walks to rafting, dependent upon your adrenalin levels. We take time to enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking farmland before heading to Auckland and a taste of big city life. Camping isn’t feasible in the heart of the country’s largest city, so we will be staying in a great hostel centrally located for exploring.

    • Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
    • Bike Rides: If you’re not doing any Waitomo activities, jump on a bike and enjoy a countryside road ride into Waitomo. You’ll be riding through the Waikato District, home to many four legged wooly friends, sheep!
    • Walks and Hikes: Enjoy a trail walk taking you through forest in Waitomo to caves and a lookout overlooking the Waitomo district.
    • Optional Activities: Blackwater rafting, glowworm cave tour
  4. We leave the City of Sails (Auckland) at 9:30am heading north to the golden beaches and warm waters of the Bay of Islands. On route we take time for a break, and a quick swim for those that are keen, at beautiful Uretiti beach. It’s a great place to relax and make use of the Frisbee, football and rugby ball on board. We then head to the historically significant town of Paihia, the main gateway for the Bay of Islands before doing a highly recommend mangrove walk from the thundering Haruru waterfalls. We stay at a stunning campsite on the shore of the Waitangi estuary where we spend 2 nights - giving you time to explore the best of the Bay.

    • Bike Rides: Forest trail rides that will give you views of the Bay of Islands, good exercise and go past the Haruru Waterfalls.
    • Walks and Hikes: An awesome walk from the thundering Haruru falls, past mangroves, over boardwalks, through forest ending at camp.
    • Optional Activities: Twilight Kayak
  5. Experience a full day exploring the Bay of Islands and its turquoise waters. This subtropical region is the perfect playground for water lovers and a great place to soak up the sunshine. With a staggering 144 islands, the Bay of Islands offers swimming, sailing, dolphin viewing, kayaking plus much more along with some excellent walks in the native forests. This region is also home to some of the oldest European settlements in New Zealand.

    • Bike Rides: If not doing an activity hop on a bike to explore Paihia
    • Walks and Hikes: If not doing an activity walk into Paihia or take a trip over to the historic town of Russell
    • Optional Activities: Day trip to Cape Reinga, Sailing, fishing, kayaking, Paddleboarding, Maori Culture
  6. There is a day full of adventure ahead as we travel to the rugged and soulful West Coast. Our first stop comes with a chance to try your skills sand boarding down the sandy slopes of Opononi. Then it’s back on board as we head south towards the Waipoua Forest, travelling through the largest remaining tract of native kauri forests in northland. We leave the West Coast and cross back over to the East towards our final destination and camp for tonight, Orewa. Home to one of the Auckland regions longest and safest beaches it’s a great place for a stroll and a swim.

    • Bike Rides: Short ride around the Orewa estuary to finish the day
    • Walks and Hikes: Short walks to see epic Kauri trees and strolling along the beach at camp
  7. Orewa is often blessed with a beautiful sunrise over the sea which is well worth the early start to check it out. We then travel through Auckland and onto the Coromandel, renowned for its natural beauty, misty rainforests and pristine white, sandy beaches. Marvel at the views on a beautiful coastal walk or take in the coastline from the water by kayak. Visit the unique and famous Hot Water Beach to dig, then relax, in your own thermal pool!  Soak up the breath-taking scenery and cameras ready for spectacular sunsets at our beachside camp.

    • Optional Activities: Sea Kayaking from Hahei beach
  8. The morning is filled with activity as we make our way south into the thermal wonderland of Rotorua. On the way, those visiting Hobbiton leave us in Matamata as we continue to the cultural and geological heart of the North Island and the perfect place to experience and learn about Maori culture and the dramatic natural thermals. There is plenty of action to choose from such as Zip Lining, OGO and the Luge or go biking in the Whakarewarewa forest!

    • Walks and Hikes: Walking to the geothermal parks in downtown Rotorua
    • Optional Activities: Hobbiton, Maori culture, Zip Lining, OGO, Gondola & Luge
  9. We spend another day in the geological heart of the North Island with plenty of activities to choose from. We recommend finishing your day with a Maori cultural experience at the Tamaki Maori Village, there really is something for everyone.

  10. Just a short drive to begin the day we visit some of the North Islands most impressive geothermal sites. We'll see bubbling mud pools, a huge Geyser and then take some time to explore the Wai o Tapu Geothermal Wonderland home to an impressive array of multi coloured rock formations and pools created by super-heated water bringing minerals to the surface creating this other worldly landscape.

    Our next stop on the way into to Taupo is the mighty Huka Falls, an impressive waterfall found along the Waikato river. This also our drop off point for those wanting to go skydiving! If you’re not skydiving there is a great walk or a bike ride into the city along the river’s edge, remembering to stop of at a natural hot spring on the way or getting an adrenaline buzz from the Taupo bungy which is conveniently located on your way into town. You’ll have some time in Taupo to grab some lunch and check out New Zealand’s largest lake, Lake Taupo, before we make our way to camp on the shores of the East Coast, Napier.

    • Walks and Hikes: Walk along the edge of the Waikato River from Huka Falls stopping off at thermal stream before exploring Taupo

  11. Get up early to check out the sunrise then enjoy a bike or walk into town for an explore of Napier city. Leaving around midday we continue our journey south as we go from one great seaside camping spot to the next as we arrive into out beachside camp at Castlepoint. Time for beach games and a ‘must-do’ walk to the Castlepoint Lighthouse before falling asleep to the sound of the waves.

  12. Our final day of tour as we travel south to Wellington arriving by 11:30am where we say our sad farewells to those leaving us here. If finishing in Nelson, we take the 1pm ferry crossing through the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, arriving into Nelson by 7pm.
