It's getting easier to study in New Zealand!

New Zealand has always been a popular destination for studying with low fees, a high level of academia and of course....cheap beer! The government recently announced changes to immigration policy with the goal of making it easier for international students to work and study in New Zealand. There were a number of changes, listed below, taking effect from 4 July 2005:

1.) International students who have graduated from a course that would gain points under Skilled Migrant Category will be eligible for a six-month open work permit.

2.) The pool of students eligible to work part time while studying will be expanded to include Year 12 and 13 school students and some English language students, provided certain conditions are met.

3.) Anyone undertaking a course of 12 months or more will be able to apply to work full-time over the summer holidays.

4.) Partners of students studying in areas of absolute skill shortage and partners of all postgraduate students will be able to apply for an open work permit valid for the duration of the student’s course of study.

For further information go to check out the immigration web site. Don't forget Flying Kiwi are also creating some work/adventure trips to help you raise funds for your travels and taste some of the real New Zealand! If you are interested in this then please contact us directly.

Adventure in: Tibet

A magical destination that conjures up images of breathtaking scetibetnery and hidden mountain communities. Tibet is indeed a peaceful oasis but also offers the perfect environment to indulge in a host of adventure activities. This article outlines some of the highlights we found.

A real treat is The beautiful Trans Himalayan drive which weaves through mountain passes and a breathtaking panorama of unique cultural and scenic diversity. It culminates on an arid plateau where you will find a treasure trove of architectural masterpieces. These include the Buddhist monasteries of Drepung, once the largest in the country The Jhokhang and the awesome palaces of the Dalai Lama. If you like the thrill and buzz of bartering in markets (often one of the most extreme sports!) the ancient Barkhor Bazaar provide a surreal oppportunity to purchase local goods.

The tourist corridor between Zhangmu on the Nepalese border and Lhasa is relatively well trodden these days but still offers some great trips, including the Everest Base Camp. Another great highlight, in west Tibet, is mount Kailash. Mt.Kailash and Lake Mansarover are important sites for Tibetan and Indian pilgrims who make a 53 km circuit, or Kora, around the mountain. This circumnavigation, clockwise for Buddhist and anti-clockwise for Bon followers, is said to erase the sins of a lifetime. The astounding mountain will take your breath away, staning 6714 meters high with dramatic sheer walls and snow-capped peaks.

here are a number of operators offering trips around the area including Alpine Adventure Nepal. Other sites of interest about Tibet include:

Thought about: Skydiving

skydive

Skydiving is an amazing, unique, adventure activity. More and more people are taking up the challenge and finding it a very addictive thrill!

Its one of those once in a lifetime opportunities with a guaranteed buzz that is hard to match. Once you have felt the feeling of freefall you will know what I mean!!!

You can skydive from a variety of heights but generally when getting started you can go from 9,000, 12,000 or even 16,000 ft. The higher you go the longer the freefall and the more time to fly and take in the views! There are options to jump with a static line (which opens when you jump) or attached to an instructor - both work well and the safety procedures are extremely thorough.

If you want to take it to the next level, there's always the option to do an AFF Course. This nine stage instruction programme allows you to develop your skills and work towards gaining the internationally recognised NZPIA A-licence, allowing you to skydive solo anywhere in the world.

There are a range of companies offering skydive options throughout New Zealand. The Abel Tasman provides one of the most stunning backdrops that we have encountered and we highly recommend the team at Abel Tasman Skydive.
