Waka Tours in Bay of Islands

For a true Maori experience we recommed a trip to Waka Taiamai to meet our "first nation people" storytellers. Visit the Marae (Maori meeting House), enjoy the sumptuous hangi dinner evenings, paddle a 50ft traditional canoe (waka) in the Bay of Islands , soak in Geothermal mineral pools alongside the elders.

Shrouded in ancient traditions and customs, you have the opportunity to gain entry into the world of the Ngapuhi, Northlands original inhabitants and New Zealand's largest Maori tribe. Historical stories tell us that Maui hauled a great fish now called Aotearoa the North Island up from the depths of Tangaroa, god of the sea. Through interactive experiences and interpretive story telling, you will learn how the Maori world view embraces the past present and future preservation and sustainability of Northlands eco systems, environmental landscapes, economic, social and cultural developments.

Enjoy sharing stories around historical events, with the arrival of the Polynesian navigator Kupe, the arrival of the European navigator 1650AD, missionary settlements 1800AD, the early clashes between Maori and European settlers, the Treaty of Waitangi; helping you to discover Taitokerau,  Northland, The Tail of the fish.
